Known for introducing cutting-edge programs like Google Docs and Google Maps, the world-renowned search engine has recently launched its newest addition to its family, Google Wave. It is a personal communication and collaboration software introduced by Google during its I/O Conference last May 27, 2009.

Google Wave is a combination of web-based service, computing platform, and communications protocol that is aimed towards merging e-mail, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking. At first, it was only designed for developers but now it has been distributed to almost 1 million users starting September 2009. The first 100,000 users were permitted to bring in between 20 to 30 additional users. Here is a sneak peak as to how Google Wave works:

A “wave” is a combination of equal parts of conversation and document. It has three distinct features. First, it allows communication and collaboration using richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, among others. Another distinct feature of a wave is that it it allows multiple users to respond to a message, edit contents, or have another user join the conversation. Third, Google Wave offers real-time conversations. You can actually see every character of what the other users are typing.
One strong feature of Google Wave is that rather than using multiple tools for ideas, menus, RSVPs, or suggested ideas, you can incorporate them into a single tool. Likewise, it allows the utilization of gadgets to add weather or maps to the event.

In addition, Google Wave frees you from the hassle of sending e-mail attachments or several copies in order to generate feedbacks, draft or discuss contents using only a single software. If you are fond of sharing photos with your friends or relatives, you simply have to drag and drop a picture from your desktop to a wave. The good thing with this feature is that other people can add their own pictures and you can easily come up with a photo album in no time.

These are just some of the power-packed features that Google Wave offers to its users. One thing is clear though: it will change the way people communicate that in no time at all, you will see a lot of people joining the bandwagon.

Online world is filled with savvies using instant messaging and emailing to keep in touch with their friends, families and clients. However, what would happen if you can get both the forms of communication together in an application and have it supplemented with other sought after features as well.
The creation of Stephanie Hannon and the Rasmussen Brothers (Lars and Jens) from Google Australia, Google Wave, which was released in October 2009, is exactly that.
Wave has been launched with the idea of allowing users to access a platform, where they can not only access or share contents, but also access a host of things without giving too much of pressure on their browser by opening a number of tabs.

There are several features of Google Wave, which made the application, one of the most anticipated releases of the year:

With Google Wave, users are allowed to communicate as well as work together. In addition to that, they get maps, videos, photos and richly formatted texts.

Participants are allowed to reply wherever they want to in the message. They can even add participants and edit content at any given point. There is an option of playback in the application, which permits them to rewind and see what was being said when they were not there.

Wave offers Live Transmissions. Thus, participants have faster communication and they can see edits in a real-time environment.

Google Wave API gives them the option of adding live social gadgets. So, they can access social networking sites Twitter, Stumble Upon, Digg and Facebook, together at the same time.

The application gives them the opportunity to use their own app within the wave.

Again, uploading is fun in the Wave. What a user needs to do is drag the file from its source and drop it in the wave.

The features, no doubt, are impressive. However, it is still too early to tell what kind of wave will the Google Wave generate in the mind of a user.
